The Arc Grand Prix Run welcomed nearly 800 runners, walkers, volunteers and spectators at Watkins Glen International on Saturday, April 8 during WGI Opening Weekend. This was the fourth year for the event, a fundraiser for The Arc of Schuyler, a not-for-profit organization based in Watkins Glen that provides a range of supports for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism.
Runners and walkers took on a challenging 3.4 mile road course while others enjoyed a one-mile walk on the track. In spite of cold temperatures and gusting wind on a challenging course, the first runners began crossing the finish line in just over 17 minutes.
Timothy Stahlnecker, 28 of Waterloo, NY defended his 2016 title by placing first overall with a time of 17:49.38. Stahlnecker finished almost two minutes faster than his time last year.
“Out of the twenty races I do in a year, this is easily my favorite. I’ll be back next year to hopefully make it three years in a row taking first place,” Stahlnecker said.
Sona Dobroxlova, 18, of Penn Yan, NY was the first female finisher with a time of 22:56.54. Second place finisher was John Copp, of Minoa, NY with a time of 18:18.84 and Casey Swartz, of Horseheads took third with a time of 18:32.55. Awards were presented to the top three male and female finishers in sixteen age categories. The event was timed by Auyer Race Timing.
